Little League loses Orland King at 93

Orland Edwin King, 93 of Kenton, passed away at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Orland was born on May 11, 1924 in Kenton, Ohio to the late Edwin and Esther (Doster) King. He was married to Mary A. Conkle and they divorced. Orland is survived by his sons Daniel (Sheri) King of Kenton, Gregory (Connie) King of Kenton, and Michael (Terri) King of Baltimore, MD; daughters Diana (Leonard) Smith of Kenton, Kathy Rolla of Cleveland, OH, Edith (Rick) Freyer of Monroe, NC, Mary Ann (Tom) Van Buskirk of Kenton, and Jennifer (Todd) McNutt of Kenton; 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; and 2 step great grandchildren. Orland was preceded in death by his grandson Brian King, brother Jim King, sister Elinor Larkin, half-brother, Bill King and special friends, Jane Ralston Webster and LaDonna Bratcher. Orland was a 1942 graduate of Kenton High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Orland is the retired owner of Orland King Plumbing. Orland volunteered with the Kenton Little League as a coach, manager, umpire and league president. He served the Ohio District 10 Little League as an umpire consultant, assistant District Administrator and District Administrator. Orland umpired the Little League World Series in 1979. He served on the Junior League umpire staff from 1981-2003 and was appointed to the Junior League Assistant Director of Umpires in 2004, a position he still currently held. Orland was also the first inductee into the Kenton Little League Hall of Fame and was a 2014 inductee into the Hardin County Sports Hall of Fame. A Mass of Christian Burial for Orland E. King will be held on Monday October 23, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes, Ada with Father Dave Young celebrant. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, Kenton. Friends will be received at the Schindewolf-Stout-Crates Funeral Home from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2017. In lieu of flowers Orland's request was for donations to be made to the Junior League World Series of Taylor, Michigan and/or Our Lady of Lourdes.
